SPOON & SPRIG STUDIO NOTES ON FUNCTIONAL ART:
I prefer not to separate my functional ceramics from my fine artwork, whether throwing a cup or creating a large installation, it’s important to me to maintain the same passion, vision and artistic approach throughout the process. And, as I create my functional ware, it is also vital to me to keep in mind that it’s my opportunity to transform what most people see as an everyday object, elevating it to a place that bridges the gap between functionality and form. A plate is not just a “plate,” a cup not just a “cup,” but participatory artworks that must be used and experienced in a more active manner than strictly visual works of art.
My art has developed from a foundation of freedom and exploration. As I create, I work in collaboration with my materials rather than in command, especially with clay and glaze. These materials were derived from the earth where they’ve existed for millions of years, and I perceive the ancient knowledge that lies within the material. I have no desire to silence that knowledge, but rather to work with it, learn from it, and create in homage to it.
We live in a manufactured world that is becoming less tangible every day, and at times it feels as if we are moving away from the small things that remind us of the beauty of the human experience. I believe the best way to resist this idea is to create and share those creations with others. These creations made by human hands and heart, allow me to connect with strangers through my art, elevating their daily experience.
